Advertisement Every day, millions of single adults, worldwide, visit an online dating site. Many are lucky, finding life-long love or at least some exciting escapades. Others are not so lucky. The industry—eHarmony, Match, OkCupid, and a thousand other online dating sites—wants singles and the general public to believe that seeking a partner through their site is not just an alternative way to traditional venues for finding a partner, but a superior way. With our colleagues Paul Eastwick, Benjamin Karney, and Harry Reis, we recently published a book-length article in the journal Psychological Science in the Public Interest that examines this question and evaluates online dating from a scientific perspective. We also conclude, however, that online dating is not better than conventional offline dating in most respects, and that it is worse is some respects.
The Radiometric Dating Game Radiometric dating methods estimate the age of rocks using calculations based on the decay rates of radioactive elements such as uranium, strontium, and potassium. On the surface, radiometric dating methods appear to give powerful support to the statement that life has existed on the earth for hundreds of millions, even billions, of years. We are told that these methods are accurate to a few percent, and that there are many different methods.
We are told that of all the radiometric dates that are measured, only a few percent are anomalous. This gives us the impression that all but a small percentage of the dates computed by radiometric methods agree with the assumed ages of the rocks in which they are found, and that all of these various methods almost always give ages that agree with each other to within a few percentage points.
Another absolute dating method is thermoluminescence, which dates the last time an item was heated. It is the only method that can be used to date rocks, pottery and minerals for dates that are approximately between to 10, years old.

Ask a question or identify a problem A scientist learns about the universe by observing. The first step in the scientific process is for the investigator to frame the problem to be solved or ask a question that lacks an answer in a way that is falsifiable. Falsifiability is the concept that an observation can show that an answer is contradicted i. Background research Sometimes combined with step three, the investigator starts addressing the question by gathering information about the question that will aid in designing experiments and making observations. The process involves background research and becoming familiar with what is already known about the question and its potential answer, including any wrong answers that were previously identified.
Form a hypothesis Based on an educated guess, the investigator attempts to answer the question they asked in step one. Based on current knowledge, previous solutions and current practice, a hypothesis is proposed that can be tested as true or false, yes or no. The potential answer to the question is stated in a way that allows for a single answer in order to determine if the hypothesis is correct. Experiment and observe The hypothesis is tested by experimentation and observation.
Scientists are particularly good at developing simple, yet elegent, questions that can be tested. Then, in a perfect world, scientists, engineers, architects, and other people use the knowledge gained from the answers to these questions to make life on Earth better. Sadly this isn’t always the case! Good questions are stated in a way that frame, or describes, a problem, and are able to be tested using accepted scientific methods.
